As the door to summer gently closes, September enters with its birthstone: sapphire. A gemstone that unites timeless beauty, rich symbolism, and deep-rooted history, adding soulful resonance to our jewelry. At Nangi, sapphire is a signature gemstone, featured in many of our most-loved designs. And naturally so — our sapphires are sourced directly from Sri Lanka, the “Island of Gems,” where color, clarity, and heritage meet in rare harmony.
Sapphire is a variety of the mineral corundum (aluminum oxide) and ranks 9 on the Mohs scale of hardness — second only to diamond. The name “sapphire” derives from the Greek sappheiros, and for thousands of years, this gemstone has adorned royal crowns, sacred robes, and heirloom jewels.
People born in September are often associated with wisdom, loyalty, and inner strength — all qualities reflected in the sapphire itself. Throughout history, this gemstone has symbolized truth, protection, and peace of mind.

For over 2,000 years, Sri Lanka has been one of the world’s richest sources of sapphires. The island’s unique geology, especially in areas like Ratnapura, produces some of the clearest, most vibrant sapphires in existence — in hues ranging from soft cornflower blue to deep royal blue, vibrant pink, and the rare and sought-after padparadscha.
Ceylon sapphires are renowned for their luminous clarity — often naturally untreated — and their ability to reflect light with a gentle, vivid glow. The sapphires we use at Nangi are inspired by this rarity and handpicked with intention, focusing on both aesthetics and ethical sourcing.
Newsflash: Not All Sapphires Are Blue
Durability
Sapphire is exceptionally robust — making it a natural choice for everyday jewelry that’s built to last a lifetime.
The Language of Color
While blue is the most iconic sapphire color, “fancy sapphires” exist in an array of stunning shades: pink, yellow, green, orange, and more. Some of the most enchanting varieties are color-shifting or bi-colored — combining multiple tones in a single gem. These sapphires change character depending on the light, creating a mesmerizing, ever-changing effect.
Teal sapphires are especially desirable — blending blue and green in perfect harmony, often associated with tranquility, depth, and exotic elegance. Bi-colored sapphires naturally display two distinct colors within the same gem — with either a seamless transition or a dramatic contrast. These variations make every gemstone truly one-of-a-kind, infusing each piece with personal meaning and energy.

Our Peacocks collection celebrates these very sapphires — where sea green meets sky blue in a silky gradient. Each gemstone in this collection is hand-selected for its rarity, intensity, and peacock-like iridescence. No two are alike — each carries its own soul.

Like all gemstones, sapphire thrives with gentle care. Use lukewarm water, mild soap, and a soft brush for regular cleaning. Avoid harsh chemicals or intense heat. For added peace of mind, we offer jewelry servicing and gemstone checks — to ensure your sapphire stays luminous and secure for years to come.
Metal Guide – Choose the Right Metal for You
At Nangi, sapphire is more than a gemstone — it’s a feeling, woven into our Nordic minimalism and Sri Lankan color heritage. When you choose sapphire, you choose loyalty, depth, and enduring beauty. Whether you’re drawn to tranquil blues, soft pinks, or the radiant glow of padparadscha, each gemstone carries your story — and a timeless brilliance of its own.
