Sri Lanka, known until 1972 as Ceylon, is one of the meccas of gemology and has actually long been known as "The Island of Jewels". It is full of gorgeous gemstones in a stunning variety of colors, shapes and sizes.

It remains one of the most important places for fine gemstones around the world, and is especially famous for its abundance of sapphires in all colors; blue, green, yellow, pink, you name it! Sri Lanka also offers much-sort-after rubies in an impressive array of reds.

And if that wasn't enough, you can also find tourmalines, garnets, spinels, aquamarines, citrines, topazes, amethysts and moonstones, amongst others. All the jewels you could ever wish for, really!

A Rich History

Few places can match Sri Lanka's rich history as a gem producer and trade center.

Sri Lanka's jewelry history is believed to be over 3,000 years old, dating back to the time of King Solomon's reign, which means that Sri Lanka is home to many of the world's oldest known gem mines.

In fact, sapphire mines were already established and in production by the time Marco Polo first arrived in Sri Lanka over 700 years ago, in 1292.

Let's just say, when it comes to beautiful jewels, Sri Lanka is the place to be.

Sapphires are a favoured gemstone the royals. In 1981, King Charles, gave a 12 carat Ceylon blue sapphire set in 18K white gold to Lady Diana, and years later, the same sapphire was given by Prince William to Kate Middleton, now the Princess of Wales.
