In the realm of love and romance, traditions often intertwine with modern values, creating an array of customs that reflect societal shifts over time. One such tradition that continues to captivate hearts around the world is the leap year engagement, a unique practice where women take the lead in proposing marriage to their partners. Whilst we think a woman can propose whenever she wants, it is a fun piece of history!

Historically, leap year proposals stem from an old Irish legend dating back to the 5th century. According to folklore, St. Bridget complained to St. Patrick about women having to wait for men to propose. In response, St. Patrick declared that on leap day, February 29th, women were granted the privilege to propose to their beloveds. This rare occurrence, happening only once every four years, symbolizes a break from convention and a celebration of gender equality in matters of the heart.

While we think that the idea of women waiting for a leap year to propose is outdated, the essence of this tradition lies in its whimsical charm rather than strict adherence to rules. In today's world, where love knows no bounds and equality reigns supreme, the leap year proposal serves as a delightful nod to tradition while embracing the spirit of empowerment and autonomy.

Moreover, the evolution of societal norms has expanded the scope of leap year engagements beyond heterosexual relationships. In contemporary times, women proposing to women has become increasingly common and celebrated. This inclusivity highlights the universality of love and underscores the importance of recognizing diverse expressions of affection and commitment.

Leap year engagements offer couples an opportunity to infuse their love story with an extra dose of romance and spontaneity. Whether it's a grand gesture or an intimate moment shared between two souls, the act of proposing signifies a profound declaration of love and commitment. In a world where time often feels fleeting, leap year proposals remind us to seize the moment and cherish the bonds that unite us.
Above you see Helene, who truly seized the moment this leap year to propose to her partner. She proposed with the wonderful and unique Textured Love Band, and got the stunning Peach Sapphire Flamingo & Baguettes and Diamond Snake Tail for herself as a an engagement ring. She wrote following beautiful words about her decision to propose:
"I have found my rock. My safety and my own safety net in an amazing man. I can be small. But being small is not the same as being weak. I have someone who knows I can do it on my own, yet is there to support. One who holds me up when I'm too tired to stand on my own. I stand on my own two feet, but sometimes it's nice to borrow others'. Maybe just for a while until one's own become strong enough.
I am Nangi, little sister. Small, but not weak.
Just strong enough to know when others' strength can contribute to growth and self-expression. Just secure enough to accept help.
Just wise enough to know that strength is found in relationships."

So, as the next leap year approaches, let us embrace the magic of love and celebrate the timeless tradition of leap year engagements.
