From step-cut diamonds to colorful gemstones, engagement rings are becoming more personal than ever. In 2025, couples are moving beyond tradition, embracing storytelling, symbolism, and individuality in their ring choices. Designs are becoming more unique, featuring everything from asymmetry and mixed metals to rare gemstone hues and ethical sourcing. As Jenny puts it, “Couples want rings that reflect not only their unique story but also their personal values… they want to be authors of their own story.”
Here’s a look at the biggest engagement ring trends to fall in love with in 2025.
Diamonds remain the most popular choice for engagement rings, with over 80% of all engagement rings featuring a diamond—whether mined or lab-grown. However, lab-grown diamonds are becoming the go-to option for couples seeking larger, more affordable, and ethically sourced stones. As their market share continues to rise, we expect more couples to embrace this sustainable alternative in 2025.
Once the classic choice for engagement rings, round-cut diamonds have been steadily losing popularity. In 2019, round diamonds accounted for 47% of all engagement rings, but by 2024, this figure had dropped to 28%. In 2025, we predict a continued decline as more couples opt for distinctive and modern shapes that reflect their personal style.
The focus on individuality-driven design has fueled the popularity of colored gemstones. Green and teal hues, in particular, have seen a massive rise in demand—a trend that aligns perfectly with Nangi’s signature sapphires. Beyond teal, couples are also gravitating toward Padparadscha sapphires, spinels, tsavorites, and tourmalines for a truly unique and personal ring. Orange, peach, and purple gemstones are also growing in popularity, as couples look for meaningful, colorful alternatives to the traditional white diamond.
Oval diamonds have been on the rise, making up 25% of all engagement rings in 2024, and their popularity is expected to grow further in 2025.
Unique diamond shapes, such as marquise, pear, and emerald-cut, are also thriving. This trend has been further propelled by celebrity engagements—Selena Gomez was recently proposed to with a marquise diamond, while Zendaya received an oval diamond in an East-West setting. These unconventional cuts and settings add a sense of modernity and personality to engagement rings, making them even more desirable.
The elegance of step-cut diamonds is making a comeback, largely inspired by Art Deco aesthetics. The geometric, long, and terrace-like faceting of step-cut diamonds offers a sophisticated and understated sparkle, making them a favorite among those who prefer a vintage-inspired yet refined look. With 2025 marking the centenary of the Art Deco movement, contemporary takes on emerald, baguette, and Asscher-cut diamonds will only continue to rise in popularity.
Globally, the typical carat weight for engagement rings has ranged between 1 and 2 carats, while in Scandinavia, it tends to be lower. At Nangi, 0.75 carats is the most popular diamond size, whereas engagement rings featuring colored gemstones often have a significantly larger center gemstone.
However, with the increasing availability of affordable lab-grown diamonds, more couples are opting for larger gemstones without exceeding their budget. This trend, which gained momentum in 2024, is expected to continue in 2025, with more engagement rings featuring statement-sized diamonds or gemstone centerpieces.
2025 is set to redefine engagement ring aesthetics, moving beyond single-metal designs. Expect to see more yellow gold paired with platinum, as well as mixed-setting styles that blur the lines between engagement and wedding rings. Multi-stone cluster designs are also making waves, where smaller diamonds and gemstones are arranged in an organic, asymmetrical spread, rather than focusing on one central stone.
White gold, once the dominant metal choice, has seen a steady decline in popularity, dropping from 54% in 2019 to 36% in 2024. In 2025, we expect this trend to continue, with more couples opting for yellow gold, platinum, and even rose gold. These metals offer a timeless and distinctive look, aligning with the growing desire for rings that feel more personal and unique.
The engagement ring landscape is shifting as couples prioritize style, sustainability, and individuality over tradition. With lab-grown diamonds leading the industry, unique cuts becoming more desirable, and colored gemstones making a bold statement, 2025 is shaping up to be the year of personalized, meaningful, and ethically conscious engagement rings.
As the market continues to evolve, one thing remains clear: engagement rings are no longer just about tradition—they are a reflection of modern love stories, self-expression, and conscious choices.
