Toi et moi

The history behind the two stone ring; also called Toi et Moi, is long and rich.

It actually dates back to the 18th century, when Napoleon Bonaparte presented his bride-to-be, Josephine, with an engagement ring featuring two pear-shaped stones, a blue sapphire and a white diamond set in gold.

Napoleon's family fiercely opposed the union as Josephine was a widow with children from her previous marriage and six years older than Napoleon. Engaged for a mere two weeks before they married in 1796, Napoleon left the country days later to lead the French army to their victorious invasion of Italy. He was crowned Emperor of France in 1804, Josephine his Empress, but divorced a few years later as she was unable to bear more children, though they reportedly remained devoted to each other. In 2013 Empress Josephine's Toi et Moi ring made the news, when it was auctioned in France, selling for close to $1 million, thanks to its outstanding provenance.

Toi et Moi might be the new trend among couples due to the meaning it carries. The two stones touching the ends represent union, like a Yin Yang, or in some way referencing the tête–à–tête Victorian sofas. We can interpret it in multiple ways, but “two souls becoming one” is the definition. A sapphire and diamond, an emerald and diamond, a pearl and a diamond – it is a precious combination that makes a ring more personal and authentic.

Sapphire

Most jewelry customers think all sapphires are blue, but in fact sapphires come in a rainbow of colors from white, black, brown, gray, violet, green, yellow, orange, pink, purple, and intermediate hues. Some sapphires exhibit the phenomenon known as color change, most often going from blue in daylight or fluorescent lighting to purple under incandescent light.

Sapphire scores a 9 on Mohs scale, and thus has excellent toughness and does not break easily when struck. This makes it a great choice for rings subject to daily wear.

For centuries, sapphire has been associated with royalty and romance. The world’s most famous engagement ring is Kate Middleton’s and Princess Diana’s blue sapphire, the "Royal Blue" - a 12-carat oval blue Ceylon sapphire from Sri Lanka.

Sapphire is the birthstone of September, and is the gemstone of creative expression and inner peace and meditation. Traditionally, sapphire symbolizes nobility, truth, sincerity, and faithfulness. It has decorated the robes of royalty and clergy members for centuries. In ancient Greece and Rome, kings and queens were convinced that blue Sapphires protected their owners from envy and harm.

Peacock

The Peacock Collection is inspired by the large, colorful pheasants, known for their rainbow-like tails that display gorgeous hues of blue and green. The peacock is a possessor of some of the most admired human characteristics, and is a symbol of integrity and the beauty we can achieve when we endeavor to show our true colors.

This majestic bird is native to South Asia, primarily found in India and Sri Lanka, where it is the national bird, but peacocks can also be seen in parts of Myanmar and eastern Pakistan. Due to their magnificent feathers, they have been introduced to several other parts of the world, including Europe and the USA.
