Heat Treatment of Gemstones — Nature’s Own Color Enhancer

Nangi drop

Colored gemstones are small miracles born deep within the Earth. Each gem carries its own pattern, its own glow — and its own story. But did you know that many sapphires and other gemstones are gently enhanced through heat treatment to reveal their most beautiful selves?

At Nangi, we believe in full transparency about how our gemstones achieve their unique color and clarity. Some of our sapphires are completely untreated — just as they were when discovered in nature. Others are heat-treated, allowing their natural beauty to shine even brighter.

What Is Heat Treatment?

Heat treatment is a natural and permanent process used to enhance the color and clarity of certain gemstones — particularly sapphires. The process involves only heat, never chemicals. The gemstone is heated to high temperatures so that small irregularities and color variations are evened out.

This is not an artificial alteration, but rather a recreation of what nature itself does over millions of years — only much faster. When gemstones form deep within the Earth, they are exposed to intense heat and pressure. As they rise closer to the surface, they gradually cool — and heat treatment simply mirrors that natural transformation.

Heat-Treated vs. Untreated Gemstones

An untreated sapphire (often labeled unheated) retains its original color — completely untouched by human hands. Such stones are rare and valuable precisely because they remain unchanged.

A heat-treated sapphire has been gently refined to bring out its best expression. The color becomes deeper, the clarity higher, and the glow more even. The result is a permanent enhancement — the stone will not fade or change over time.

At Nangi, we proudly offer both:

  • Untreated sapphires for those who seek the purest, most natural expression.
  • Heat-treated sapphires for those who want a deeper, more consistent hue — at a slightly lower price, without compromising quality or ethics.

An Ethical and Natural Process

Heat treatment is an accepted and sustainable practice in fine jewelry. It does not alter a gemstone’s internal structure or value. At Nangi, we use only heat — never chemicals — and all our sapphires come from small, certified suppliers in Sri Lanka, where the process is carefully supervised and carried out with respect for both people and planet.

When you choose a sapphire from Nangi, you always know exactly what you’re getting. Every gemstone is carefully documented, and we always disclose whether it has been heat-treated or not. To us, conscious luxury means combining beauty with transparency — helping you make choices guided by both heart and mind.

Perfect Beauty — The Natural Way

Whether you choose a heat-treated or untreated sapphire, you’ll receive a gemstone that is unique, genuine, and made to last. Heat treatment does not harm the stone — on the contrary, it helps it reveal its full potential. That’s why many of the world’s most iconic sapphires, including those in royal collections, are in fact heat-treated.

At Nangi, we celebrate both nature’s imperfections and humanity’s ability to refine them — with respect, expertise, and love for the craft. If you purchase a piece from us that includes a certificate, it will always specify whether the gemstone is heat-treated or not. All custom rings come with certificates.
